If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?

Back to all People
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the renowned Russian writer, served eight years in a Russian Gulag prison, becoming an outspoken critic of Soviet communism. He was born into a devout Russian Orthodox family, who managed to maintain their faith amidst the anti-religious campaigns of the Soviets in the 1920s. Over time though, Solzhenitsyn lost his faith and embraced Marxism Leninism as an atheist. However, after spending many years in a Soviet prison, he gradually became an Eastern Orthodox Christian. His experiences of the evils of prison and communism qualifies him to state: "If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?"
