Back to all People
Ayaan Hirsi Ali is an activist and writer, known for her outspoken views on religion and advocacy for women's rights. Born in Somalia, she later received political asylum and citizenship in the Netherlands, where discrepancies on her Dutch asylum application were scrutinized, though she retained her Dutch citizenship. In her early 30s, Hirsi Ali renounced her Islamic faith becoming an avowed atheist. During her time in parliament, she collaborated with film maker Theo van Gogh on a project critical of Islam's treatment of women. This work resulted in death threats, and Van Gogh's tragic murder forced Hirsi Ali into hiding. Subsequently, she moved to the United States where she established herself as a writer. In 2023, Ayaan Hirsi Ali published an essay in Unheard magazine that surprised many when she wrote: "Christianity has it all. That is why I no longer consider myself a Muslim apostate, but a lapsed atheist. Of course, I still have a great deal to learn about Christianity. I discover a little more at church each Sunday." Is it possible for a person to reject the faith of their fathers, become an atheist, and then make the Christian Decision? Ask Ms. Ali.
