Bear Grylls
  • Profession: Adventurer former SAS
  • Type: Sports
Edward Michael "Bear" Grylls, a British adventurer and writer, having been a member of the Special Air Service (SAS) unit of the British Army, first gained public attention after embarking on a number of notable adventures, achieving several world records in hostile environments, and later became widely known for his television series Man vs. Wild. Grylls, born in Northern Ireland, hails from a family with a rich heritage where his father, Sir Michael Grylls, was a Conservative politician while his mother, Sarah, is the daughter of Patricia Ford, briefly a member of the United Kingdom Parliament. His elder sister, Lara, gave him the nickname "Bea"' when he was just a week old. When he was four years old, his family relocated to Bembridge on the Isle of Wight, the largest and second-most populous island in England. Here, his father introduced him to climbing and sailing where he developed a passion for adventure. Bear Grylls commented on his beginning an adventure with Jesus when he said: "I remember praying a simple prayer up a tree one evening and saying, God, if you're like I knew you as a kid, would you be that friend again? And it was no more complicated than that. And actually the amazing thing is that all God asks is that we sort of open the door and He'll do the rest."... "The journey's been that faith has been the wildest ride. And Jesus, the heart of the Christian faith is the wildest, most radical guy you'd ever come across. He was always hanging around with the prostitutes and the tax collectors and having parties and banquets, and I found myself drawn to that character, not the kind of fluff that we like to box as religion." Has Bear Grylls discovered the ultimate adventure following a man named Jesus?
