Dali, a renowned Spanish artist, was initially an atheist like his father, and emerged as a leader of the surrealist art movement in the 1930s. However, later in life, Dali returned to the Catholic faith of his mother, and refocused his artwork. When he had an encounter with Pope Pius XII, he announced himself as a "Catholic without faith" and spent many years trying to reconcile Catholic dogma with science in his paintings. Yet, in 1989, prior to his death, Dali accepted the last rites of the Church. Is there room in Christianity for the fusion of an avant garde artist and the teachings of the Church?
