Dean Ray Koontz, a prolific American author of suspense thrillers and science fiction, has published over 105 novels and sold 450 million books. Growing up, Koontz was subject to regular beatings and abuse by his alcoholic father, which influenced his later writing. In his college years, Koontz found solace and understanding in the Catholic faith, a stark contrast to the familial chaos he was accustomed to. He was drawn to Catholicism's "intellectual rigor", which allowed him to perceive life in a way that recognized the mystery and wonder inherent in all things. His newly found faith offered him existential answers to life's profound questions and equipped him with the tools to confront evil. "Each of us, in our daily lives, encounters evil "¦ If we don't want to read about it or think about it, I don't think that's a truly Christian point of view. We have to acknowledge it, face it and defeat it. That's what each of my books is about."
