Fyodor Dostoevsky, a 19th century Russian novelist and writer, wrote over 30 books and short stories including Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons and the Brothers Karamazov. Dostoevsky's literary works explore the human condition during the troubled political, social, and spiritual atmospheres of 19th-century Russia. Many of his writings have Christian themes. Despite grappling with his own doubts, Dostoevsky remained a devoted follower of Jesus as noted when he stated: "It is not as a child that I believe and confess Jesus Christ. My hosanna is born of a furnace of doubt."
