Dr. John Piper, an American New Testament scholar, pastor and Baptist theologian, has written numerous award winning books, never accepting a royalty, but donating them to a charitable foundation. He was raised in South Carolina, where his spiritual awakening began at an early age experiencing a religious conversion at the age of six. Yet, his calling was not immediately clear. It was not until he contracted mononucleosis during college that his life's purpose would become apparent. While bedridden, he found inspiration in the radio broadcasts of Pastor Harold John Ockenga. This experience moved him to abandon his initial educational trajectory in chemistry and instead, focus his life on Christian ministry. He then entered the Fuller Theological Seminary, later earning his Doctor of Theology degree in New Testament studies from the University of Munich. During John's life, he experienced many unexpected twists and turns, remarking on the mysterious way in which life unfolds he said: "In every situation and every circumstance of your life, God is always doing a thousand different things that you cannot see and you do not know." He also noted: "Desire that your life count for something great! Long for your life to have eternal significance. Want this! Don't coast through life without a passion."
