Joni Eareckson Tada, an evangelical Christian author, radio host, artist, and founder of Joni and Friends, was born to sports minded parents. So, as a teen in Baltimore, Maryland, it came as no surprise she enjoyed riding horses, hiking, tennis and swimming. A tragic accident on July 19, 1967, however, dramatically changed the course of her life. At the age of 17,while swimming in Chesapeake bay, Joni dove into the water, and within a instant, became a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the shoulders down. Following this life-altering event, Joni struggled with her disability and resultant depression. Despite these hardships, Joni leaned on her Christian faith to help achieve success as a writer & radio host. Joni shared some insights that reveal both her faith and resilience : "Sometimes God allows what he hates to accomplish what he loves."
