Back to all People
Karl Landsteiner, a German biologist, physician, and immunologist, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930 for his revolutionary work on blood group classification, enabling physicians to transfuse blood without endangering the patient's life. Later Landsteiner, in collaboration with Erwin Popper, discovered the polio virus. Although he was born into a Jewish family, Landsteiner embraced Christianity and was baptized into the Catholic Church in 1890.
