  • Profession: Novelist
  • Type: Writer/Artist
Leo Tolstoy, a popular 19th century Russian writer, is widely recognized as one of the greatest novelists of all time penning such notable works as "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina". Despite receiving nine nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature and Nobel Peace Prize, he never won either accolade. At 50 years of age, Tolstoy experienced a religious transformation, becoming a Christian, all be it an unusual one. His literal interpretations of the ethical teachings of Jesus, led him to identify as a fervent Christian anarchist and pacifist. Tolstoy held the belief that a full application of Christian principles would lead to a stateless and churchless society. "The commandments for peace given by Jesus, those simple and clear commandments, foreseeing all possibilities of discussion, and anticipating all objections, these commandments proclaimed the kingdom of God upon earth. Jesus, then, was, in truth, the Messiah." Note: Is there room in the Christian faith for anarchist?
