Madam C.J. Walker, an African American entrepreneur, is recognized as the first female self-made millionaire in U.S. history according to the Guinness Book of Records. She established a thriving business specializing in a line of cosmetics and hair products for black women. Ms. Walker had five siblings who were born into slavery making her the first to be born free. Tragically, she was orphaned at age 7 when both her parents died, after which she moved in with her brother-in-law. Through her hard won earnings, she generously funded the YMCA, Tuskegee Institute, NAACP and numerous other charities. "I have endeavored thru all my business career to show the public and my race that I have no desire for cheap notoriety, but have done only my Christian duty, as God has enabled me to see it."
