Martin Luther King (Nobel Prize, PhD)

Back to all People
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an American Baptist minister and activist, devoted his life to the advancement of civil rights for people of color through nonviolence and civil disobedience for which he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, King was raised in a religious family; his father, King Sr., and his maternal grandfather were both Baptist Ministers. Despite enduring personal struggles as a child, including depression and a suicide attempt, King excelled academically. He skipped two grades graduating from high school at age 15, and earned his PhD at age 26. Known for his nonconformity, Dr. King led numerous boycotts and protests, often resulting in his arrest and imprisonment. His life was frequently marked by violence, including when his home was bombed, and ultimately with his assassination in 1968. He fought the evils of societal prejudice thru the strength of his faith: "By opening our lives to God in Christ, we become new creatures. This experience, which Jesus spoke of as the new birth, is essential if we are to be transformed nonconformists... Only through an inner spiritual transformation do we gain the strength to fight vigorously the evils of the world in a humble and loving spirit."
