Mary Magdalene
Back to all People
Mary Magdalene was a woman who, according to the Gospels of the New Testament Bible, journeyed with Jesus as one of his followers 2,000 years ago. Not only did she witness Jesus's crucifixion and burial, but Mary was the first to arrive at the empty tomb after Jesus's resurrection while His apostles were still hiding for fear of the Jews. Mary Magdalene is mentioned twelve times in the gospels, more than most of Jesus's apostles, and more than any other woman. 2,000 years ago, when women were dramatically subservient men, Mary Magdalene would have been considered a rebel and radical activist. It was very unusual for a woman at that time in history to assume such a prominent public role in supporting a cause such as Christianity. The majority of major Christian denominations venerate Mary Magdalene as a saint.
