On October 26, 1942 in the WW II battle of Guadalcanal, Mitchell Paige's platoon was overrun by a Japanese regiment. After all but 33 of his Marine platoon were killed or wounded, sergeant Mitchel Paige helped operate four machine guns stopping an entire regiment of 1,000 enemy soldiers, for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. After the battle died down, Paige found himself rifling though his pack desperate for something to stop the bleeding from a bayonet wound. As he searched, his Bible fell out opening providentially to Proverbs 3, with the words from his mother when he left home earlier: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths." Paige felt he'd been divinely protected when he told his commander. "God was with us."
