He also trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. While he is a Christian, Neal is considered one of the best "bad guy character actors" in the industry today. In 2010 he was fired from the ABC series "Scoundrels" for refusing to participate in explicit sex scenes. Reflecting on the incident and his Catholic faith, McDonough stated, "I am very religious. I put God and family first, and me second." ... "My faith is central to who I am as a human being, not just as an actor—so it informs every decision I make, whether it's deciding on a project or deciding on how to treat the guy who cuts me off in traffic."
