St. Ignatius of Loyola

Back to all People
Ignatius of Loyola originally named Íñigo, embarked on a military career at the age of 17, earning a reputation as a "fancy dresser, expert dancer and womanizer." However, his life took a dramatic turn when a cannonball shattered his right leg during battle, leaving him with a permanent limp. During his convalescence, after reading about the lives of Christ and the saints he was inspired to devote himself to God and follow the example of Francis of Assisi. Ignatius of Loyola would later establish the Catholic order of Jesuits with the mission to educate. He summarized our relationship with God when he stated: "God freely created us so that we might know, love, and serve Him in this life and be happy with Him forever...Go forth and set the world on fire...Act as if everything depended on you; trust as if everything depended on God."
