Saint Jude, also known as Thaddeus, was one of the original 12 disciples of Jesus. He is credited with writing the Letter of Jude found in the New Testament. About 65AD, Jude suffered martyrdom in Beirut, a Roman province of Syria. According to one historical account, Jude's body was later transported from Beirut to Rome where it was laid to rest in a crypt at St. Peter's Basilica. In the Catholic Church, he is venerated as the Patron Saint of lost causes. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is named after Saint Jude and focuses on children's catastrophic diseases such as leukemia and cancers, often considered "lost causes".
