Due to serious abuse by his father, Perry at one point attempted suicide. His torment was so intense that at age 16, he had his first named changed from Emmitt Jr. (fathers 1st name) to Tyler to distance himself from his dad. Tyler Perry's mother played a pivotal role in his transformation. Tyler publicly attests to his Christian faith when he said: "I am a Christian, I am a believer, and I know had I not been a person of faith, I couldn't be here in this place, and I wouldn't be walking the path that I'm on now."
