Werner Heisenberg (PhD, Nobel)

Back to all People
Dr. Werner Heisenberg, a German theoretical physicist, was one of the pioneers of the theory of quantum mechanics and was awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize in Physics for his pivotal role in pioneering the theory of quantum mechanics. Raised a Lutheran, Heisenberg enjoyed classical music and was an skilled pianist. He left an indelible mark on the field of science with the "Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle" . During World War II, Heisenberg's university career stalled when he was attacked by the SS and German press as a "White Jew" (i.e. an Aryan who acts like a Jew). As one of the fathers of quantum mechanics physics, he understood the contrasts between science and religion when he stated: "The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you."
