Dr. William Daniel Phillips, an American physicist, was co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997 for his contributions to laser cooling, a technique to slow the movement of gaseous atoms in order to better study them. He is also a founding member of the International Society for Science and Religion. Dr. Phillips academic journey began in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1966. In 1973, he earned his PhD in Physics from MIT. He is a Christian and Methodist who is involved in the dialog of religion and science. "I believe in God. In fact, I believe in a personal God who acts in and interacts with the creation. I believe that the observations about the orderliness of the physical universe, and the apparently exceptional fine-tuning of the conditions of the universe for the development of life suggest that an intelligent Creator is responsible."
